This fable is about two soul mates: a lion and a lioness. Both are happily in love, but something terrible goes wrong and the lion starts seeing another lioness because he fakes his happiness with his "soul mate." This fable exemplifies the possibility of unfaithfulness of man when in a relationship. It shows the coward act of man being careless and letting go of what was most important to him.
One day there were two friends, a lion and a lioness living in the Savannah grasslands towards the western part of Africa. Curtis, the lion, was a very friendly and welcoming person, not to mention funny, while Destiny, was also honest, open-minded, and quite shy. Both were involved in a group on how to hunt better instructed by the mighty king of all lions, Lynus. “Today’s task, lion and lioness, is to find a partner and combine both of your knowledge to attack those groups of rabbits together,” pointing toward the right side of the field. As everyone started grouping up, Curtis walked toward Destiny unassumingly acting like she wanted to be partners together.
“Now, listen, if both of us are attacking on both sides, and I escape with the food you—“
“Oh shut up Curtis,” laughing quietly to herself. “We both know who’s going to attack and receive the food first!” Both Curtis and Destiny got ready for their prowl, as they waited for Lynus’s roar. “Who do you think will get the groups of rabbits first,” asked Destiny.
“Me!” roared Curtis as Lynus roars out a roar that can be heard from across the other side of the grasslands. Caught by surprise, Destiny runs after Curtis and the rabbits. Curtis already has gotten ahold of the first three rabbits, while she’s on her first one. Unexpectedly, as Destiny starts devouring the rabbits, Curtis jumps on top and tries to play with her while hunting. Both roll around in the grass and start laughing loudly.
“What are you doing Curtis!” yelled Destiny smiling as she gets up, pulling a leaf out of her head.
“Just having some fun! We do this every single day! Might as well make hunting fun with the prettiest lioness here right,” Curtis said eagerly. As Destiny was blushing, they both walked to their caves and said there goodbyes. However, before they went their separate ways, Curtis secretly left her a silver metallic coin that he found behind her sleeping mat.
A few years passed and both Destiny and Curtis were soul mates. Both had the perfect life—they hunted with better strategies, they told each other their dilemmas as best friends would do, as well as living in the same cave together! “Hey Curtis! Do you want to go walk around the eastern part of the grasslands to watch the sunset?” asked Destiny.
Curtis walks out of the cave with his back toward Destiny, “Uh… not today Destiny! I have a special favor that Lynus asked me to do! Maybe some other day, okay?”
She had this confused look on her face and was questioning his unusual behavior, “What’s wrong with him? He always watches the sunset with me. Hm, I guess I’ll go alone.” The worried lioness walks out of the cave and starts heading out to the eastern side of the grasslands.
About an hour later, both arrive at the cave simultaneously. She walks toward her sleeping mat silently, and lies down without saying one word to Curtis. Curtis starts pacing back and forth, rearranging his sleeping mat and the items he’s accumulated in the previous years as a kid. With the corner of her eye, Destiny looks towards Curtis and wonders what that strange shiny and colorful object is behind him. Suddenly, he stops pacing and immediately looks at Destiny. Confused, Destiny asks, “Curtis, are you okay? What’s that behind you?”
“What? Nothing,” Curtis said stuttering, with eyes wandering everywhere but Destiny. She slowly gets up and walks towards Curtis with bewilderment. As she got closer she could feel the tension building up within Curtis. Without looking at him, she walks around him but he stops her. “What are you doing?”
“I want to see what that mysterious object is,” said Destiny. She quickened her pace, and started walking faster. She grabs the object just in time before Curtis could slap it out of her hands. She reads the box: “To: Curtis, From: Jaz” Shocked, she opened it and inside was a shiny colorful ball with his name on it. Destiny dropped the box and the ball and shouted, “What is this! Is this another lioness? Tell me Curtis! What are you doing?”
With a guilty feeling inside, Curtis lies, “Nothing! It’s nothing! Remember Jaz from the hunting group? She’s an old friend of mine! She’s nothing, I promise you!”
Destiny then stands there like a statue in silence, trying to take in everything he just said. She finally comes back to reality and says, “I believe you Curtis. I believe every word you say. From now on, will you promise me you’ll be honest with everything?”
“Of course, Destiny. I promise.”
A few months pass by and life for Curtis and Destiny was going perfectly planned as they hoped it would be, until the day of her birthday. As she woke up from her sleep she found a note on his sleeping mat. Dear Destiny, I’ll be gone for a little while, I left rabbit meat next to the entrance of the cave. I’ll be back after sundown! Love you lots, Curtis. “Where on Earth could he be at?” muttered Destiny. She picked up the meat and started eating her brunch. As soon as she was done, she headed out towards the western part of the grasslands where Curtis and her used to hunt, back when they were friends. Destiny walks through the grasslands peacefully until she saw two figures in the distance watching the sunset. As she got closer and closer she realized a familiar face. “Curtis?” She walked even closer and closer and she saw that it was Curtis! Curtis and… Jaz? Both were watching the sunset together snuggled up with one another, gazing at each other’s eyes. She let out quite winced and ran back to the cave. Both Jaz and Curtis looked and immediately Curtis knew.
“Destiny! Wait!” Curtis then let go of Jaz and ran after Destiny. With tears running down her face, Destiny came to the cave and started taking her stuff. She grabbed her sleeping mat, some rabbit meat, and the ball that Curtis gave her. She grabbed the shiny metallic item and was ready to throw it out of the cave, until Curtis came and told her to stop. “Stop! Destiny, where are you going! What are you doing?” Destiny ignored him and started packing more of her belongings. Curtis stopped in front of her tracks and grabbed her by her paw, “Destiny, I’m sorry… You know I didn’t mean to!”
“Get away from me you unfaithful creature! You have no right to touch me!” shouted Destiny. “This was your entire fault! You promised me Curtis, you said you promise! Then, look what happen! Go with your sweet Jaz and let me be!” Motionless, Curtis let her go and she was on her way out to the far eastern part of the Savannah. Curtis stood there stunned with his mouth wide open.
“What have I done...” said Curtis to himself.
Four years has passed and everything’s changed. Curtis is now alone in the cave with no to love, to talk to, to befriend with. Although for Destiny, things we’re going better than perfect. She then becomes soul mates with a lion named Ryan who was the total opposite of Curtis—faithful and honest.
